MIGRAIN: Industries - Ownership and control

  1) Type up your  research notes  from the lesson - what did you find out about your allocated media conglomerate? Selection of companies: Alphabet,  The Walt Disney Company,  Comcast,  21st Century Fox,  Meta,  Viacom,  News Corp,  Time Warner. If you were absent or didn't have time in the lesson to make these notes, research  any one  of the companies above and find examples of all the terminology outlined in the notes at the start of this blogpost. Alphabet - Bought companies such as YouTube and have expanded from a search engine into also production. Warner Bros began as distributors and started eventually producing their own media products. 2) Do you agree that governments should prevent media conglomerates from becoming too dominant? Write an argument that looks at both sides of this debate.   I partly agree conglomerates are becoming very powerful because they control 90 percent of the market and can easily have a influence on young people through the immense amount of medi

Theory questions and your opinion 1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? I believe that media is only partly responsible in social behaviour and violence because mostly crime is based off someone's own mental health and persona. However, the media can influence/alter someone's persona. 2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. People are adapting the behaviour they see online to their real life personas. For example, Andrew Tate influences young teenage boys into believing his misogynistic views towards women.  3) Research  three  examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral pani

MIGRAIN assessment 1 - learner response

  1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). WWW: Well written english and good use of media terminology throughout. EBI: Points are not well developed enough and have written down half explained points. 2) Read  the mark scheme for this assessment carefully . Identify at least  one  potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. Q1- I could have used Todorov's theory to suggest that the gun implies  disequilibrium and the character looking off screen suggests impending danger. Q2- I could have mentioned that II Manors wants the audience to get to know the character while Nike wants to stay ambiguous. Q4- I could have mentioned that the oppostional readings were that the product reinforces negative black stereotypes. Q3- I could have mentioned "repetition and difference". This allows producers to evolve the genre but also maintain the audience. 3) Read this  exempl

  1) Read this  Mail Online article about the effects of videogames . How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model? This article conveys that audience can be influenced by violent videogames to do violent acts in real life. 2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone  criticise  this front page? This young boy is a example of someone who is influenced by a videogame. Someone may criticise this newspaper since they are using his "babyface" to try make the person look less threatening.  3) What do  you  think of the hypodermic needle theory? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media? No I don't the hypodermic needle theory is a good way to represent media audiences because fake news can easily be differentiated  to real news. Two-step flow model 1) Summarise the two-step flow model.  What is an opinion leader? Assuming the audience consumed media without

Heavy consumers of alcohol, junk food and lotteries, also trainers. Brand choice involves impact and sensation. 1) Make up their names:  Bob & Karen 2) Where do they work/study?  Bob - Drug dealer Karen - Unemployed Bob - Studied at Greenford High School and got all U's in his GCSEs Karen - Dropped out after primary school because she failed her SATs 3) What do they do in their spare time?
