Collective identity and representing ourselves

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'
We are involved in constructing our own identity.

2) List three brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity.
Samsung- I use my phone everyday to help me with my tasks.
Sketchers- I wear these shoes daily to go gym.
Dell- My home computer so I can do my studies.

3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?
Yes because media would rather go for a more flashy story than the real truth.

4) Explain Baudrillard's theory of 'media saturation' in one paragraph. You may need to research it online to find out more. Media saturation means that there is a ton of cultural value placed on lifestyle that this shapes how someone lives. Society is heavily influenced by media saturation since most of the social norms are constructed by this.

5) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?
Like 70 percent because I only tend to post when I'm out and having fun to make my life seem more interesting than it actually is. I have never removed pictures before.

6) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?
Data mining is used by companies so they can identify trends. I don't mind it because these products fit by lifestyle and the type of person I am. This is not a invasion of privacy because I gave permission.

Task 3: Representation & Identity: Factsheet blog task

Finally, use our brilliant Media Factsheet archive on the M: drive Media Shared (M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets) to find Media Factsheet #72 on Collective Identity. The Factsheet archive is available online here - you'll need your Greenford Google login to access. Read the whole of Factsheet and answer the following questions to complete our introductory work on collective identity:

1) What is collective identity? Write your own definition in as close to 50 words as possible.
Collective identify means a sense of belonging within a group or society. This may be in things such as sports, religion, school, economic state, social class, gender or sexuality. Most people within the same group would express similar views and ideologies among society.

2) Complete the task on the factsheet (page 1) - write a list of as many things as you can think of that represent Britain. What do they have in common? Have you represented the whole of Britain or just one aspect/viewpoint?
Big ben
Tea
Fish and chips
Royal Family
BBC
None of these things have anything much in common expect being significant within British culture. This is just one viewpoint.

3) How does James May's Top Toys offer a nostalgic representation of Britain? These toys are targeted towards older people so they can reflect back to the "good old days" being a kid in Britain.

4) How has new technology changed collective identity? People are able to connect with others across the world who share similar interests.

5) What phrase does David Gauntlett (2008) use to describe this new focus on identity? Identify is complicated and everyone thinks they got one.

6) How does the Shaun of the Dead Facebook group provide an example of Henry Jenkins' theory of interpretive communities online? This collective identity is called a interpretative community. They actively use social media to seek inspiration and create new identities. This Facebook group is a fan created group resembling collective identity.
