MIGRAIN: Introduction to Representation

 1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies?

It is a good way to explore questions of social and cultural context.

2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media?
A news editor will decide the way the image of Kate Middleton is represented and can alter the actual meaning behind it.

3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representation' in 50 words.
When consuming media products, we should always question why they are being created and also by who they are created by. The audience needs to attempt to understand the reason why this product was made in a particular way and the meaning that is implied toward the audience consuming it,

4) How does Stuart Hall's theory of preferred and oppositional readings fit with representation?
Hall had argued that audience not to passively accept the stereotypes presented by the media content and draw to their own social and cultural experiences for representation.

5) How has new technology changed the way representations are created in the media?
Through news and media productions we can clear see the way different stereotypes are being presented.through the narratives,

6) What example is provided of how national identity is represented in Britain - and how some audiences use social media to challenge this?  The 2014 World Cup. The Sun spent millions of newpapers for free to UK households to express english identity. People may use social media to express their own views and thoughts.

7) Write a paragraph analysing the dominant and alternative representations you can find in the clip from Luther.
The character Luther is represented through typical male stereotypes through his aggression and dominant nature. However, he has physiological dilemmas with emotions. This also subverts male stereotypes in a other type of way.
