MIGRAIN: Introduction to feminism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
Laura Bates wanted to give women a outlet to speak up.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies? Everyday Sexism empowers women. I think feminism is still partly required in western societies due to a minority of groups like elderly which aren't raised up on those ideologies.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
Technology helped create a website to get their idea across to millions of people around the world.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
Yes because the future generations will be raised through these feminist ideas so they will already know about it. I believe that men and women should have equal rights however I think some feminists take it too far and I do not support that idea.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
The online coordination of feminists in response to sexism, misogynist and racism in society. It is a problem because feminists may step on the extreme side and completely hate all men.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
Yes I do since the internet has allowed feminists to have a public voice and express their views out to society. This empowers them.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
Everyday sexism- It allows you to share your stories with the people of the world. This is done to show the world that sexism still exists in society.

HeforShe- This is a invitation for men and all genders to stand in solidarity with women. This is done to create a united force for gender equality.
FCKHS campaign- It is a clothing brand which supports for feminism and gender equality.

This Girl Can- You can choose how you want to exercise because it is your own body.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?I have a mixed opinion towards feminism and new digital media because it can be both positive and negative. It is positive because it gives women a voice however it also negative because it can go to more extreme sides such as causing discrimination for men. Feminism isn't just standing up for women rights it is for equal rights. I feel the same way towards the fourth way because there are many of those who exploit it and express their biased views.
